About UsThe overall goal of New Haven Reads is to provide an environment where children and adults have access to free books and tutoring to increase their literacy skills and academic performance. We place particular emphasis on serving the most economically and educationally disadvantaged children and families who otherwise would not have access to these resources. New Haven Reads operates a Book Bank stocked with donated books from the community. Anyone can walk in and take free books. New Haven Reads also offers free afterschool tutoring. In 2007, more than 200 students have come once or twice weekly for homework help and tutoring in reading, writing, math, critical thinking and basic literacy. Our programs also include homework tables, math and writing tables, ESL classes and a Success by Six kindergarten program. In addition to our free “book store,” we pack and deliver boxes of books to social service agencies, homeless shelters, nursery schools, and individual schools and classrooms. The Book Bank serves as the headquarters for the Ben Carson/Yale University Reading Initiative Program. Run primarily by volunteers from across the community, New Haven Reads seeks to create a safe environment with casual role models for positive behavior and to foster intergenerational learning experiences.
