Volunteers

Volunteers are the soul of our organization.

Book Bank

The New Haven Reads Community Book Bank receives and redistributes used books to area residents. Volunteers help people check out their books, receive book donations, sort, count, and stamp books, as well as keep the bookshelves in good order. Volunteers also box books for delivery to area organizations and help with outreach events such as giving out books at Shaw’s Supermarket.

X stamping and checking out books   Wayne Shutee spacer Wayne Shuttee, 90, is a retired Unitarian minister who works at New Haven Reads three times a week. Wayne runs the front desk and packs book orders for us.

Tutoring

In 2007, we had more than 80 tutors. Seventy-five percent of these tutors are volunteers. Our volunteer tutors come from across our community. They are college students, graduate students, current and retired educators, business men and women, administrators, social workers, and retired police officers to name a few. Some are fluent in Spanish. Some have advanced math degrees. Some are artists. All of them are committed to helping our students succeed.
