History

In November 2003, Christine Alexander started the New Haven Reads Community Book Bank in donated space in the Chapel Square Mall. The idea for a free book Bank dedicated to raising the public awareness of the power and joy of reading grew out of a citywide initiative to promote literacy. Since 2001, New Haven Reads has expanded its programs to include extensive book distribution and free after school tutoring program that served 200 students in 2007. New Haven Reads offers ESL classes, a Motheread/Fatheread program and a Success by Six Kindergarten Program. In 2005, New Haven Reads moved to its present location at 45 Bristol Street in the Dixwell neighborhood. These quarters are large enough to accommodate its students and its book distribution program. New Haven Reads served as a distribution center for The Big Read in 2007.
