Program Overview
Tutoring
The free afterschool tutoring program has become the heart of our activities. Over 400 students come after school for one or more hours per week by appointment. We match our students with tutors from across our community.
Book Bank
The Book Bank is set up like a book store. All our books are donated by individuals or community groups. Books are loosely arranged by topic. All books are free to individuals, teachers and organizations. Since 2004, we have distributed over 725,000 free books!
Book Distribution
New Haven Reads packs and delivers books to Yale New Haven Hospital, the Hill Health Center, and a long list of nursery schools, shelters, and senior centers, as well as area schools and individual classrooms.
Kindergarten Program
Funded by a grant from United Way of Greater New Haven, Success by Six is a program designed for children who are struggling in kindergarten. Participants are seen for two hours each week for individual tutoring by trained New Haven Reads volunteers.
Group Activities
In addition to individual tutoring, New Haven Reads sponsors homework tables, math tables, writing clubs and a book club. In the summer, special activities are offered as well.
Chapel Haven
Chapel Haven, a residential school and independent living facility for adults (18+) with cognitive disabilities, and New Haven Reads have been working together for four years. The Chapel Haven volunteers sort, shelve, pick up and deliver books. This experience helps the Chapel Haven students gain training that may lead to later paid positions.
Summer Kindergarten Literacy Camp
Our kindergarten Literacy Camp expands the reading and language skills of children who will be entering first grade. |
